Chapter Thirteen

‘Why are you here again?’ Murdag said. ‘You never come here.’

‘You never come here,’ Anna argued, though she’d promised herself she would make an effort to stop arguing with her sister. This didn’t count, did it?

‘I do when I want fresh bread,’ Murdag retorted.

But her sister wasn’t simply grabbing a loaf and dashing off, she was helping in the ovens. That bore some discussion, but not now.

‘I’m here to apologise,’ Anna said, taking the bread peel from Murdag and walking the few steps to the table to shake out the loaves before putting on two risen loaves and handing it back to her sister. The movement was completely unnecessary since her sister could easily carry the peel and take the two steps to the tabletops herself, but it allowed Anna to be close enough to say the words that needed to be said.

‘I’ve heard your apologies before.’

‘I’m doing mine here in the kitchens where anyone can hear.’ Anna handed her the peel.

Her sister hesitated for a moment before taking it from her. ‘What’s changed?’

So much.

As much as they argued, they were sisters, and Anna wasn’t surprised Murdag knew she was risking her pride by being overheard.

Was Camron good for her?

If she went with everything she knew of his past, or his reputation, she’d recommend him as a good husband to any of her acquaintances. He’d always been kind to Lachie, never once treating him different than any other boy.

On Colquhoun land, he was well received, and Ailis teased her about his protectiveness of her and how handsome he was. But...was he good for her?

Ailis had said she had to learn to trust in order to trust, which had made no sense to her at all until last night. But she did trust Camron. She must, or else she couldn’t have shared what she did with him.

Except... She was still scared, and he’d taken all her reasonable excuses to stay away from him and touched and kissed them away.

He wasn’t a child; she wasn’t too old. He’d burned away all those insecurities until she was nothing but simply her. She hadn’t been that way since she’d first met Alan.

No, she was different. There was still the hurt Alan had caused, and she could never be that free with herself again.

When Alan came to Graham land, he became the very air she breathed, his smiles the sun. She hadn’t been the only one to welcome him with open arms. And when Alan chose her out of all the available maidens, she had heedlessly thrown herself at his every smile and touch.

Was Camron similar to Alan? Until this spring, she wouldn’t have even compared them. She only did so because...she had feelings for him.

‘I talked to Ailis.’

‘That was two weeks ago,’ Murdag said. ‘You’ve already told Father and me how she was doing.’

‘I didn’t tell you of the bits of wisdom she gave me.’

Murdag stopped. ‘Gave or pummelled into you? Because I’m going for pummelling.’

‘She’s pregnant, and I couldn’t exactly run away. So I had to stand and take it.
